Daisy A Day Floral & Gift

Sunny Sunday Showcase
Week 2 (April 17)

Daisy A Day Floral & Gift in St. Joe is owned by Tracy Omann Smith, who started that location 25 years ago.

My next business that I want to spotlight is actually another flower shop.  Yep, that’s right. Gasp.  I am going to brag about another flower business and send you her way. Or… send her your way because (unlike me) she does delivery!

I really believe that when we all do better, we all do better. Community over competition. And truly, Tracy and I are not competition.  Among MANY other things in her shop, she sells beautifully symmetrical and structured arrangements, and I market whimsical freshly grown bouquets.  She does detailed event work and I will sell flowers by the 5 gallon bucket so you can DIY it. It’s like one person selling fishing boats and one person selling fish houses.  They’re both used for fishing, but they’re not the same. I also believe that there is no such thing as too many flowers.

I have sent dozens of customers her way time and time again for various birthday arrangements, anniversaries, and special occasions.  I don’t deliver, and that is something a lot of customers are looking for.  My flowers are ready when they’re ready, and I rarely order any wholesale except for things like Easter when I have nothing blooming yet.  Basically the majority of what I sell is what I grow. When I do order them wholesale, Tracy orders them for me because she’s amazing.  (And she deserves kudos for the fact that she has done it for me at her cost because again, she is amazing.) If I can’t give the customer what they need, I send them Tracy‘s way.

My first year of growing and selling cut flowers was 2020. I sold them out of my roadside stand, and I surprisingly sold over 200 arrangements.  Fast forward to December of that year, and my perfectly healthy husband died suddenly of a heart attack while exercising.  I needed to order flowers for his casket.

I wandered into that flower shop in St. Joe that I had driven by hundreds of times but I had never been inside.  My best friend from high school, Amanda, was with my mom and me.  We had just left the funeral home, and we were on our way to pick out the casket after this.  I don’t remember all of the details, but I think I pulled out my phone and started showing her my Instagram page and I said I wanted to give him flowers like the ones I had grown the previous summer.  I told her make sure they were all Minnesota annuals and bright and summery colors.  I didn’t want to decorate his casket for Christmas.  I wanted it to look like our farm did just four months prior. That’s all I really remember. Now that I think about it, I wonder if I paid her… I certainly don’t remember. Maybe it got billed to the funeral home.

A few months later, I wandered into the store again. I re-introduced myself to her, and apologized for not remembering her name.  However, I remembered her face. She was such a kind person and she of course remembered me.  I would imagine our initial interaction was quite memorable for her.  I told her that I was expecting our second child, and I basically stood and watched her make arrangements for a while. It was incredibly therapeutic and gave me some healing at a time when I was quite broken.

Tracy has the cutest gifts in her shop, and always has it seasonally decorated on the outside. We drive past it twice a day on our way to and from daycare, and my daughter is always the first to notice when Tracy changes it from Valentine’s Day to St. Patrick’s Day, or whatever holiday is next.

The first time that I wanted to order flower bunches wholesale to make some bouquets rather than selling what I grew myself, I was speaking to my friend Amanda again on the phone and trying to figure out where I should order them. She immediately remembered where I got Josh’s funeral flowers, and encouraged me to give Tracy a call. I’m pretty sure she said something along the lines of “that lady was so nice, even if she can’t help you herself, I guarantee she’ll tell you where to order them from.”
